SPI Inspections

SPI Inspections Inc. focuses on providing specialized utility system infrastructure inspections and Field Services to the power industry. Our founders have over 100 years of combined experience with extensive knowledge in design, construction, operation and inspection of utility systems.

We are Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) certified allowing us to author thermography reports.

We are a full inspection and verification service. Our primary goal is delivering qualified inspection services and independent verification of construction standards and monitoring of power systems. Our services include but are not limited to the following:

High definition (HD) imaging of construction progresses and completion reporting, monitored remotely by your engineering team.
Final construction inspection reporting, for the contractor, prior to the handing-over of the project.
Pre-commission reporting for the utility owner prior to the acceptance of the utility system. Provides a historical benchmark, for the contactor and the utility, each having the same independent information verification.
Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermography to troubleshoot and identify issues in the operation and maintenance of the utility system.
Gas detection leakage reporting, including carbon dioxide (CO2), Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6), Nitrogen (N) as well as hydrocarbon leak detection for the Power Industry.
FILD Gas detection and leakage reporting, to identify fugitive emissions for the Oil Sector.
Earth resistance testing.
Conductor sag verification.
Cathodic protection inspection.
Hot-spot detection of equipment sleeves and splice while the system remains energized.
Heat loss audits of buildings and structures.

Our Team of Experts

Brett Fleming

Brett is a Journey Certified Powerline Technician with an Inter Provincial Red Seal Endorsement (RSE), a Blue Seal Certificate in Business Competencies and over 13 years as a post-secondary trade’s instructor.

Brett has over 32 years of experience building, commissioning, and inspecting power systems, working with the major power producing companies such as TransAlta Utilities, Altalink Transmission, Fortis Distribution, ATCO Electric, ATCO Transmission to name a few. He has invested a significant amount of time working for and with many of the major contracting companies, such as Valard Construction, MacGregor Construction, Midlite Construction and Ace Construction, among others, throughout Canada and the USA.

Brett has 13 years’ experience teaching as a post-secondary instructor and as a Chair in the programs, overseeing both the Powerline Technology and the Power System Electricians trades. He is an expert in these fields, and he has spent a significant amount of time investing in the next generation of trades people, developing curriculum, participating as a judge at World Level Powerline Rodeo competitions (the Powerline Skills completions), and working on national committees to harmonize the Power Trades across Canada.

Brett’s wide array of knowledge in transmission and distribution systems provides a background for innovation and together with his team he has searched the world over for technologies to apply in new and exciting way to make the industry safer and more efficient.

Elton Hunter

Elton has been in the construction industry for over 43 years. He owned and operated Skyline Power Ltd. in northern BC for 15 years before moving back to Alberta to teach at NAIT. During his business dealings with Skyline Power Ltd., he constructed 6 High Voltage Substations. He also taught Powerline and Substation Construction for over 13 years at a post-secondary level with NAIT. He was specifically tasked with teaching Line Construction and Safety Code, Electrical and Transformer Theory, and Metering. He also taught Substation Theory and Apparatus. In addition to his work with Skyline Power Ltd., he constructed over 70 substations while employed with Alberta Power (now ATCO Electric). Elton has a wealth of construction knowledge with over 40 years’ experience in the Power Industry. Elton Hunter is a Journey Certified Powerline Technician with an Inter Provincial Red Seal Endorsement (RSE), 40 years of experience, 15 years as a private business owner, and 13 years as a post-secondary trade’s instructor.

Elton has over 43 years of experience building, commissioning, and inspecting power systems, working with the major power producing companies such as BC Hydro, Yukon Electric, Norther Canada Power Commission (NCPC), and BC Transmission Corporation (BCTC) to name a few. He also owned and operated a private line contracting company operating primary in Northern BC. His company built, installed, and maintained new substation and transmission infrastructure in Northern BC. He specialized in live line work, underground/underwater cabling, transmission structures and substations.

Elton has also invested a significant amount of time working for and with many of the major contracting companies, such as Artic Power, Midlite Construction, Twin River Power and Rokstad Power BC, among others, throughout Canada and the USA.
